andricongirl @ 04:47 pm: that didnt last long :\
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd's stealth boat Ady Gil has been cut in half by a Japanese security vessel in the Antarctic today, the group's leader Paul Watson said.

The $1.5 million high-tech vessel's remains were sinking, but its six-man crew had been rescued and was uninjured, Captain Watson told The Age online.

Captain Watson said the Ady Gil was idling in waters near Commonwealth Bay when it was suddenly approached and rammed by the Japanese ship Shonan Maru, which has been detailed to provide security to the fleet.

nemesis_to_go @ 02:23 am: Dominion dissected
You may not have noticed this, but issue 2 of Dominion, the goth mag that comes free with Terrorizer, is out now.

I say 'you may not have noticed this' because if you're not a regular reader of Terrorizer (as I assume most Dominion readers won't be) you may not be aware of its presence. The marketing push has not exactly been overwhelming - the new issue is mentioned briefly on MySpace via the Twitter feed, but the introductory blurb about issue 1 has not been updated or removed. Meanwhile, I can only assume that it's too technically difficult to change the background on the Twitter webpage, where visitors are still greeted by the cover of issue 1.

Just as well I'm here, then, innit:

That's the cover of issue 2. A lavish studio shot of Faith & The Muse, and it's good to see a 'real' goth band (as opposed to a metal band that goes 'Huuuurrrggghhh!') getting the cover spot. That's a key point with Dominion, I think. It might be joined at the hip with an out-and-out metal magazine, but its success will depend on covering the goth waterfront, not simply hurling more metal bands at us.

And there lies a paradox. While there might be a certain crossover between goth and metal these days, goth did not originate anywhere near the metal zone. There's probably a whole generation of gothic metal fans around now who'd find that hard to believe, but Mr Scathe he speak the truth. Even now, goth is predominantly a completely unrelated genre to metal.

For this, personally, I am profoundly grateful. But, of course, it means that in order to succeed, Dominion has to persuade a largely non-metal (perhaps even anti-metal) readership to fork out £3.99 for a full-on metal mag, just to get a 16-page goth supplement. That's already quite a big ask - and if the 16-page goth supplement is itself loaded with metal, I suspect it'll be too much of an ask. For Dominion to gain a loyal readership, Terrorizer has to do something that I'm sure doesn't come naturally: step away from the metal zone.

Two issues in, I think the line is just about holding. Just about.

Holding the thin black line... )
